Lies and Deciet
There are many lies throughout the story that play into the theme of corruption and deceit. Characters are more worried about themselves than others and would rather keep secrets and lie in order to protect their image.
- "You see," cried Catherine triumphantly. She lowered her voice again. "It's really his wife that's keeping them apart. She's a Catholic, and they don't believe in divorce." Daisy was not a Catholic, and I was a little shocked at the elaborateness of the lie. (2.98)"

- Tom lies to Daisy about his affair with Myrtle and never mentions it to her.
